# Life Insurance Doesn’t Always Insure You for Life

[CatherineAnn](https://www.doqit.io/en/blog/author/catherineann)

One of my life insurance policies recently came to an end. Which, given what life insurance is for, is actually quite a good thing.

I'd had the policy for years.

Like most bits of life admin that have been around for that long, I wasn't giving it a great deal of thought. It was there. I paid for it. I knew I had life insurance.

And then it ended.

Nothing had gone wrong. It had simply reached the end of its term.

But it made me realise that I'd been carrying around that sentence - *I've got life insurance* - without really thinking about the detail behind it.

Because life insurance doesn't necessarily insure you for life.

Obvious when you say it out loud, isn't it?

## When did you last look at yours?

We tend to take out life insurance at a particular point in our lives.

Buying a house. Getting married. Having children.

At the time, we probably give it quite a lot of attention. How much cover do we need? What will it cost? How long should it last?

Then it's done.

And we get on with life.

Unlike the insurance policies we renew every year, life insurance can sit there for years without giving us much reason to think about it.

Meanwhile, life carries on changing.

The mortgage gets smaller. Children grow up. Relationships change. People divorce or remarry. Financial circumstances change.

And the policy you arranged all those years ago is still the policy you arranged all those years ago.

Until, in my case, it isn't. Because it's ended.

## So what have you actually got?

Some life insurance policies cover you for a fixed term. Some decrease over time, often alongside a mortgage. Whole-of-life cover is different again.

I'm not going to attempt to tell you what sort of life insurance you should have. That's definitely not my department.

But I do think there's a very good life admin question here:

**Do you actually know what you've got?**

When does your policy end?

What does it cover?

Does it still meet your needs?

And who would receive the money?

You may know all of those answers.

But if you haven't looked at the policy since you took it out, perhaps it's worth checking rather than assuming.

## Then there's the question we don't really want to think about

If somebody else needed this and you weren't there to tell them where it was, would they know?

Because that's what makes life insurance slightly different from most of the life admin we deal with.

Ultimately, you're not really organising it for yourself.

Someone else may need to know the policy exists, who it's with and where to find the information.

And they're likely to be looking for it at a time when they could really do without another thing to sort out.

That's the bit I think is easy to miss.

We spend a lot of time thinking about whether important information is safe.

We don't always think about whether the right person would actually be able to find it.

## Mine is in Doqit

I've stored my life insurance information in Doqit and shared it securely with someone I trust.

When the time comes, I don't want them having to search for it, or even wonder whether it exists.

They'll know where it is and how to find it.

Because life insurance is probably one of the few bits of life admin you're organising entirely for somebody else.

**It's worth making it easy for them.**

### A quick life insurance check

If this has made you wonder when you last looked at yours, dig it out and remind yourself:

- What type of policy do I have?
- When does it end?
- How much cover is there?
- Does it still reflect what I need?
- Who would receive the money?
- Does someone I trust know the policy exists and where to find the information?

You don't necessarily need to *do* anything afterwards.

Sometimes good life admin is simply knowing what you've got.

## About Doqit

**Doqit is the system households rely on to make sure nothing gets missed.**

Founded by Catherine Ann Reid and built from lived experience, Doqit was created to take the weight of life admin off people's shoulders; not by helping them "get organised", but by giving them a system that works with the reality of modern life.

It connects documents, information and deadlines in one place, so everything is easy to find, simple to manage, and there when it's needed most.

From insurance policies and passports to school records and medical information, Doqit keeps track of the details that matter, helping people stay on top of the things that are easy to forget but difficult to live without.

**Doqit. Nothing missed. Nothing lost... even when there's no Wi-Fi!**
