The University Checklist Nobody Talks About: The Life Admin Every Student Needs

This week I spent a couple of hours at a local secondary school.

It's work experience week and, for the students who hadn't been able to secure a placement, the school had invited a handful of local business owners in to talk about what it's really like to build a business from scratch. We chatted about fundraising, taking risks, what I'd learned over the years and the advice I'd give my younger self.

They asked some brilliant questions.

Towards the end, they wanted to see Doqit.

As they were watching one of the demo videos, I found myself talking about National Insurance numbers, NHS numbers, passports, student finance, bank details and rental agreements.

Then I found myself thinking something I hadn't really considered before.

For many of those students, the next twelve months will be the first time they're responsible for keeping track of that information themselves.

Not because they don't know what these things are.

Because life is about to start asking them for the answers.

We spend weeks preparing them for university…

If you've got a teenager heading off to university this autumn, I imagine your house looks a bit like most before a big life event.

Lists everywhere. New bedding. Kitchen essentials. Laptop. Saucepans. Extension leads.

A thousand conversations about what they should and shouldn't take.

Parents spend weeks making sure their children have everything they need to live independently.

What we don't always think about is helping them organise the information they'll suddenly become responsible for.

That's not because we don't care.

It's because nobody really talks about it.

The questions they'll suddenly be asked

Within the first few weeks of university or starting a new job, it's amazing how often young adults are asked for information they've never really had to think about before.

National Insurance number. NHS number. Passport details. Student finance information. Tenancy agreement. Bank account details. Proof of identity.

Sometimes they'll know exactly where everything is.

Sometimes the first phone call home starts with:

"Mum… do you know where my…?"

There's nothing wrong with that.

It's part of growing up.

But it's also one of those life admin milestones that catches families by surprise.

Independence isn't just about cooking

When we talk about preparing young people for adulthood, we often focus on practical life skills.

Can they cook?

Can they budget?

Can they do their own washing?

All important.

But being independent also means knowing where your important information is and understanding why it matters.

That's a skill too.

And, like most skills, it's much easier to learn before you need it.

A different kind of university checklist

Before they leave home, I'd add one more job to the list.

Sit down together for half an hour.

Show them where the important documents are.

Talk them through the information they'll almost certainly be asked for.

If you already keep digital copies, show them how to access them.

If you don't, this might be the perfect time to put a simple system in place together.

The goal isn't to make life complicated.

Quite the opposite.

It's to avoid that moment, three weeks into term, when they're trying to complete a form, verify an account or sign a tenancy agreement and realise they don't know where anything is.

The first step into adulting

As I walked home from the school yesterday, it occurred to me that life admin has milestones, just like life itself.

Starting school. Learning to drive. Leaving home. Starting a career. Buying a house. Having children.

Every stage brings new responsibilities and new information to keep track of.

Yesterday's conversation reminded me that, for this year's sixth formers, that next milestone is just around the corner.

And perhaps one of the best things we can do isn't buy another kitchen gadget or another set of towels.

It's to help them feel confident about the information they'll soon be responsible for.

Because adulthood isn't just about looking after yourself.

It's also about knowing where your life is.

Before They Leave Home: A Simple Life Admin Checklist

Before your son or daughter heads off to university or starts their first job, make sure they know:

  • Their National Insurance number.
  • Their NHS number.
  • Where their passport is kept.
  • Their bank account details.
  • How to access student finance information (if applicable).
  • Where important documents are stored.
  • Who to contact if they need help finding something.

It won't take long.

But it might save a lot of stress later.

About Doqit:

Doqit is the system households rely on to make sure nothing gets missed.

Founded by Catherine Ann Reid and built from lived experience, Doqit was created to take the weight of life admin off people's shoulders; not by helping them 'get organised', but by giving them a system that works with the reality of modern life.

It connects documents, information and deadlines in one place, so everything  is easy to find, simple to manage, and there when it's needed most.

From insurance policies and passports to school records and medical information, Doqit keeps track of the details that matter - reducing mental load and giving people confidence that nothing is slipping through the cracks.

Because life admin isn't difficult.  It's just relentless.
